School spirit shapes the identity of Carlsbad High School. Whether it is pep rallies or football games. Even in the winter, when the football lights are off and the light is on the courts, school spirit continues to skyrocket.
Junior Ben Hampton is a new member of ASB this year, and school spirit is his top priority. He spends a lot of time filming edits, promoting the school, and spreading his spirit through campus.
“Staying spirited at Carlsbad is one of our biggest goals throughout the year,” Hampton said. “We still do things like hosting events, spirit weeks leading up to dances, lunch events, and
basketball games. And we do many different things at basketball games to make it a lot more hype for people and make people excited for the game.”
Hampton shares how ASB puts a big effort into making school more exciting every day for students and keeping energy high. He describes how even in winter, during the off-season of football, they do their best to keep the spirit at the basketball games and make sure the attendance is similar to football games.
“We have a tunnel where players run through with smoke machines, we have big effects and crazy lights and a DJ to keep the loud crowd presence the same,” Hampton said. “Basketball season carries the spirit through the second semester, which I think makes school more fun and gives something to look forward to.”
Freshman Ryan Harris is a very involved student in ASB, and is learning how spirit makes such a large impact on campus. Harris has been involved with the student body since middle school and has followed the ASB path into high school.
“We do things called Thankful Thursday, so every Thursday we have a table out, and you come up to the front of the ASB room, and then whoever you write we deliver it to,” Harris said. “We also have our dances, which also have spirit weeks leading up to them, along with music and events at lunch.”
Harris describes how our campus can stay involved and do fun things throughout the campus, even in the winter, with no big games. Even with the controversy of Carlsbad not having winter football games, CHS ASB uses events and spirit weeks to keep the school excited and looking forward to something.
“Overall, we try to keep everything as spirited as the year goes on rather than just ending off after the first semester,” said Harris.
Hearing this information straight from the source of ASB goes to prove how spirit defines school, whether it’s football season or basketball season. At Carlsbad High, the students maintain the energy, so spirit isn’t just one season.
“Spirit is what defines our campus, no matter the season,” Hampton said.
