Skateboarding club offers students a place to connect over a shared interest while building skills and friendships. Meeting every other Wednesday at lunch, members come together to watch videos, skate and grow a strong sense of community.
The club’s purpose is centered on connection and inclusivity. Leadership plays a key role in creating an environment where students are comfortable in attending.
“I just thought [the club] would be a great place for students to interact and share their passion,” junior Cooper Asbury said.
With that foundation, the club focuses on bringing students together both during and outside of school. Meetings and hangouts allow members to bond over their shared interest in skating.
“My goals are just to bring together the community and provide a place for people who are interested in skateboarding to hang out,” Asbury said.
Creating a welcoming environment is especially important for new members. The club emphasizes encouragement and a relaxed atmosphere to help beginners feel comfortable and included.
“I think everyone in the club would just encourage someone new to come to the club and I mean we have food, snacks and good vibes,” Asbury said.
For many members, the club is more than just an activity. Shared experiences both inside and outside of school deepen the friendships and connections made through skating together.
“I wanted to join a skate club just because all my friends were in it, and it’s just a good community of people I’ve been with my whole life,” junior Landon Boes said.
The supportive environment also helps members grow in their confidence and abilities. Conversations and collaboration during meetings contribute individual improvement.
“I’d say the club has helped me improve my skills and confidence,” Boes said.
As members continue to grow within the club, the supportive environment leaves a lasting impact. That encouragement is what snakes the club welcoming to both experienced and beginner skaters.
“I’d recommend this club to other students because it’s a good place to come if you wanna learn about skating, or if you want to get into it, it’s a really welcoming and open place,” Boes said.
While the club has faced some challenges, leadership has worked to maintain consistency and keep the club interesting. These efforts have helped the club continue to grow.
“Being president definitely helped me learn how to bring the community together, and it just kind of set up something for me to stay consistent with,” Asbury said.
