Playing soccer since she was four years old, freshman Kiara Decelles proved her skills when she made the CHS varsity team. While keeping up with school and her social life, Decelles strives to improve even further on the field.
Lancer Link: How did you start playing soccer?
Kiara Decelles: I first started when I was four at the YMCA. I really loved the game. I started competitive when I was nine, and have been playing competitively for six years since.
LL: What sacrifices have you had to make for soccer?
KD: I used to play softball and volleyball as well, and this year I gave them up to focus on soccer and become a better player.
LL: Why do you enjoy it?
KD: I think its kind of a different sport. You build such a great chemistry with the girls you play with. It’s a fun game. It’s a lifestyle.
LL: What motivates you to compete?
KD: Being on the varsity team is pretty prestigious. They have a lot expected of them so it can be nerve-racking. I play to support the team and grow individually. I work for my team and myself.
LL: What advice do you have for younger players?
KD: Some advice that I have is that skill and technique can be taught but the passion has to be there. Work hard, practice skills and have fun. It’s all worth it.
