Carlsbad high school is well known for having strong athletic teams and never falling short no matter what court is being played on. One sport that has stood out recently has been the CHS boys varsity and junior varsity volleyball.
Recently the varsity team competed in a tournament in Hawaii where they were ready to play hard, earning them a fourth place position overall. Now Carlsbad boys indoor volleyball is ranked tenth in the whole country.
“I really enjoyed it,” senior Ben Sauerwine said. “It was a good bonding experience.”
Sauerwine also plays the position of starting setter, which has become a cornerstone of the Lancers success so far. As the season progresses he knows he will have to adopt more of a leadership role.
“I’m definitely prepared to be a leader,” Sauerwine said. “I hope to help my team triumph.”
Looking through the season so far, the Lancers have been nothing but on top of their game. One highlight was winning against the cross town rival La Costa Canyon.
“It went to five,” Sauerwine said. “We had KUSI News there.”
Being in his last year, Sauerwine has been playing since he was a freshman. And is now committed to play at the University of San Diego.
“Volleyball taught me how to build new friendships and work hard,” Sauerwine said.
But this leadership role doesn’t end with Sauerwine, rising senior Drake Pisarczyk is ready to adopt this role.
“I think being a leader on my volleyball team has helped me take charge in other aspects of my life,” Pisarczyk said.
He currently is an outside hitter on the junior varsity team. Similarly to the varsity, JV has been on a roll only dropping 2 sets in total all season.
“We’re undefeated right now,” Pisarczyk said. “Its great having such a good record.”
Besides thanking all of the players for their immense effort throughout the season, it comes down to their work on and off the court.
“Even if you don’t feel like practicing you need to get out there and try, “ Pisarczyk said. “It really shows who’s going out of their way to practice.”
When the final set has been played and the Lancers end in a triumphant season, it wasn’t always about when they won. It was about the brotherhood of Carlsbad volleyball.
“I hope that the newer players will enjoy each minute of the season as much as I did,” Pisarcyzk said.
