This season CHS junior varsity boys volleyball managed to remain undefeated no matter what team they faced off against. The boys give a deeper look into the inner workings of their team and how they used their connection as friends to propel them in their success that eventually led to an undefeated season.
While practice is an extensive part of their training it is also important that the team has a strong relationship with each other to understand what the team needs during a match. How the team dynamic works was a vital part to the boy’s outstanding performance.
“We’re pretty good friends…we definitely goofed off a lot, but whenever it came to games, we’re always able to lock in and just get the job done,” sophomore Justin Bojador said.
While the team was balancing their love of the game, their competitiveness, and their social structure, they used their coach’s guidance to ensure they stayed on task. During practices and games that were after long days at school the team relied on each other and their coach to keep each other accountable and on task.
“Coach always made it a fun environment, and during practice,” freshman Landon Sampson said. “When we needed to not mess around he would make sure we actually were getting better.”
Even during close games the team was able to use the trust they had built with one another to work together and defeat whatever team they were facing off against. The dynamic of the team gave the boys the grit they needed during the close games and taught them to believe in each other as they each had a job to do.
“[The team dynamic] helped us come back from games that were close, when we were down 10 points in a game, we’d come back, it was just cool, we used the team chemistry,” sophomore Liam Reilly said.
As the season came to a close the boys reflected on their experience as a team and eventually came to the conclusion that their shared love of the game and their newly forged friendship were key components in their success. For the JV team attitude was just as important as skill.
“We’re just having fun and doing what we love, and that helped us have a good mindset the whole game,” Sampson said.
