At Carlsbad High School, students capture the energy of high school sports, sharing each moment with the community. Their passion turns games into creative opportunities, inspiring a new generation of photographers, while showing the emotions of the game through their photos.

Many high school photographers enjoy catching big, wide shots during the games. These kinds of photos help capture the whole scene at once while adding depth to the feelings the viewer feels.

“I like wide stadium scenes, they are really cool because you get to see all the environment, by also seeing the player,” freshman Julian Liner said. “I think it can also add more emotion to the photos, helping capture the feeling of the players, coaches, and fans there to watch the games.”

Photography is more social than some may think. Building connections and relationships within the community helps build your comfort when it comes to photographing for events.

“I have a lot of connections when it comes to the players which helps when it comes to the community,” senior Kai Shaffer said. “Reaching out and talking with people to build the connection is also important when it comes to sport photography.”

For most photographers, it’s not always easy to be in the right spot to take the perfect shot. Throughout their career, they have learned ways to improvise and adjust to the game.

“Sometimes I face the challenge of where to be because it can be hard to get in the right spot,” Liner said. “Although throughout the photography journey, you find different ways and tactics to finding the right angles and knowing the insight of the games.”

As they continue to build their skills, they learn something new each time. This shows that switching up tactics and stepping out of their comfort zone helps in the long run.

“I just keep practicing, continuing to take pictures for different events, different areas. I think trying different sport events has helped me grow as a photographer.” Shaffer said.

Sports photography has helped many photographers find a style that’s for them. With each photo, they learn different things that lead them to improve every time, with their photos but also creatively as a person.

“Its helped me grow more creatively because I’ve changed my editing styles throughout my whole time being a photographer,” Liner said. “You can just keep improving everyday.”
