Beach Volleyball PE allows students to take a break from the classroom and provides a fun alternative, allowing students to stay active in a unique outdoor setting. Students gain valuable athletic skills by learning the right techniques and strategies on court.
Many students believe that having a variety of options in physical education is important. The variety of different PE classes CHS has to offer allows students to explore their interests and passions when it comes to sports.
“[CHS] offers [beach volleyball] because it’s really fun and it’s a good alternative to just normal PE,” junior Jake Eddington said. “It provides me a chance to get better at the game.”
Earlier this year, CHS approved new sand courts to bring a beach-volleyball experience to campus. Students are eager for the added chance to play a fun, competitive sport, with the courts expected by early 2026.
“I’m very happy that they’re bringing the sand courts over,” freshman Nathan Luria said. “I like that I don’t have to go all the way to the beach, and it gives me the chance to experience more while at school.”
Many schools don’t have the opportunity to offer beach volleyball at school due to their location. Since Carlsbad High School is by the beach, it allows students to enjoy this fun alternative on the water.
“I believe we are one of the only high schools in San Diego County to offer this.” beach PE teacher Andy Tomkinson said. “I know there are a lot of beach teams, like La Costa Canyon has a team, but they do not have a PE class.”
This addition of PE not only improves their physical education but also creates a sense of community among students. It encourages students to support one another, forming friendships they may not have made in a classroom setting.
“It allows students to get off campus,” freshman Cash Ward said. “Some campuses are a little overcrowded, and with us living in such a great natural environment, kids are a little more adept at learning when they’re in a more harmonious environment.”
Carlsbad offers a wide range of courses, and beach volleyball stands out as a unique addition. It gives students an exciting way to build their skills while fostering friendly competition.
“Carlsbad is known to have a lot of off-campus and rare classes like surf, skate, and aquatics,” Tomkinson said. “We are fortunate to have this class.”
