Surf P.E. is one of the many alternative forms of physical education that Carlsbad high school offers. However, most people don’t know much about the program because it is overshadowed by other options such as weightlifting, football P.E., or just regular P.E..
For many students, possibly the most unknown part about the unique class is the curriculum and how students are evaluated. In a normal P.E. class teachers may grade students on physical fitness, mile times, or other health factors, but Surf P.E. is graded in a different way.
“[Getting a good grade] is pretty easy as long as you get there on time, [and you’re mainly] graded for getting in the water,” freshman Bowie Moldovan said.
While outside factors like the rain can cause problems and concerns to those taking the class, the course continues through various environmental factors. Whether it’s rainy, cold or choppy waters there’s not much that can stop the California surfing spirit.
“We usually don’t care that much because if it’s poppin we just still go out,” freshman Mason Gomez said. “It doesn’t really affect us, it just makes it a little more uncomfortable because it’s cold, it’s raining and if the waves aren’t good, it’s just sad.”
With all the stress of daily life many people need different ways to take a break, and for many, surfing is the perfect outlet. Surf P.E. is a fun way for students to step away from class and have a break from a traditional school campus.
“Honestly I wanted to take a break during the middle of the day and get out of school and get lunch whereas other freshmen can’t do that,” Moldovan said.
Like with every class, Surf P.E. brings its own struggles whether family factors or the school schedule. Some students are unsure about taking the class due to the problems it can cause with transportation and communication. ,
“It’s been really difficult having to check my phone everyday because [one time] I went down to Tamarack when there wasn’t Surf P.E. that day” Moldovan said. “[I was] almost late or absent.”
While Surf P.E. is a well liked class, some students taking it have struggles and doubt taking it for a second year. The experience is different for everyone but for some it may just not be the right fit.
“Honestly I might not do it next year just because sometimes it’s stressful to get all your stuff ready in the mornings.” said Moldovan.
Through the continuous effort of the Surf P.E. class and the coach, those who take the class gain more confidence and overall more skill. While some may have their doubts, Surf P.E. is a great community to be a part of.
“I’ve always thought surfing’s a good way to connect with the ocean and since we’re a beach town a lot of people do it.” Moldovan said.
