Girls varsity soccer defeats Patrick Henry

The Carlsbad Lancers girls varsity soccer team overtook Patrick Henry in the CIF quarterfinals this past Friday on Feb. 22.

The Lancers (12-3-5) faced Patrick Henry (15-4-3) at home in an evenly matched battle.

In the first half the lancers dominated, scoring an early goal in the eighth minute when a corner kick from captain, senior Toni Duggan connected with a header from sophomore Shelby Lee.

The Lancers defended well against several attacks from Patrick Henry until the 26th minute, where a shot slipped past goalkeeper junior Sara Harelson, leveling the score at 1-1 by halftime.

The second half was underway and the game looked to be evenly matched again, both teams pushing hard to take the lead. The Lancers ended up slipping by Patrick Henry’s usually solid defense in the ninth minute with a pass from Duggan to sophomore Christina Nixon. Giving Duggan her second assist of the night and the Lancers their second goal to take the lead.

The score now at 2-1 in favor of Carlsbad caused Patrick Henry to frantically try to score to get back in the game. However, the Lancer defense, led by senior Katherine Padgett and Harelson, held strong, not allowing anything to get by them.

The final whistle blew and the Carlsbad Lancers ended victorious of Patrick Henry with a final score of 2-1.

The Lady Lancers move on to the next round of CIF playoffs. The semifinals will be held at home against Poway, at 5 p.m. Come out and support the girls on their way to a CIF champion repeat.
