Carlsbad has been facing droughts since around 2012. Contrary to what some believe, the city is still in an ongoing drought and needs to conserve as much water as possible.

The State of California issued new mandates as of June 10, 2022. These rules range from small changes to completely new laws listing many ways for Carlsbad citizens to conserve water.

Sprinklers can be adjusted to lower levels of use for fall and winter but changed to higher use in summer. After rainfall, sprinklers should be turned off for at least 48 hours to conserve water. Even though sprinklers and other appliances should only be on for a certain amount of time, accidents happen, which is why the government gives citizens 72 hours to repair leaks. There are many laws concerning irrigation, including that all irrigation should stay on your property, and should be limited to ten minutes per station.

As the drought continues, the Carlsbad Municipal Water District gave recommendations to help citizens save more water. For example, some residents started trading their grass lawns for water-conservative alternatives such as artificial turf. Another resource offered is a free WaterSmart checkup at residences to suggest more ways to save water based on personalized water usage.

The state having a drought can lead to detrimental effects to our environment and community, putting wildlife and plants at risk. Conserving water can help prevent these negative outcomes.

As Carlsbad continues to battle the drought, businesses have stepped up and contributed to water conservation. As more companies begin to conserve water, the citizens of Carlsbad continue to benefit by saving money on water and energy bills. Conserving water can help guarantee that there is enough for future generations.
