April’s biggest movies undeniably gave audiences and critics something to talk about. These top films of April and early May stood out among the rest in box office success, and are loved by audiences around the globe.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is a sequel that was released on April 1st, and follows Mario, Luigi and Peach as they try to free Rosaline from Bowser Jr., who is trying to destroy the universe to free his father, Bowser. The film contains a phenomenal cast: Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor Joy and Jack Black. The movie’s opening weekend grossed $131,703,340 domestically, and worldwide $983,741,931 according to Box Office Mojo, which is a major box office success with its budget being $100,000,000. It was a fan favorite with an audience score of 88%, although received a poor critic score of 42% according to Rotten Tomatoes.
“Michael” is a biopic telling the story of Michael Jackson’s life and struggles through his early life to his “Bad” era containing visually stunning, iconic performances from throughout Michael’s career. The film stars and introduces Jackson’s nephew, Jafaar Jackson. Released on April 24th, the movie grossed $97,206,874 domestically in its opening weekend and $581,020,270 worldwide with a budget of $155,000,000. It is recorded as the biggest opening weekend of a music biopic. Although “Michael” received a low critic score of 39%, it received a glowing score of 97% by the audience, praising Jafaar’s performance playing his uncle. With this movie being split into two, it leaves fans more excited to see the rest of the King of Pop’s story on the big screen.
“The Devil Wears Prada 2” tells the story of Andy Sachs returning to Runway in an effort to save the magazine from decline alongside her former boss Miranda Priestly. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, with numerous surprise appearances by fashion icons. The movie, released on May 1st, received a domestic gross of $143,447,244, and a worldwide gross of $431,847,244. Although there is no confirmed budget, the film has been dominating the box office. Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the film a Certified Fresh score of 79%, and an audience score of 85%, with most ratings comparing it to the first film.
Although each movie told a completely different, unique story, it shows just how diverse entertainment and cinema is. Regardless, each story captivated audiences around the world. April and May were terrific months for movie fans, and these movies are certainly worth the top spots on everyone’s watchlist.
