On Mar. 26, 2026, the city of Carlsbad implemented strict e-bike restrictions banning children under the age of ten years old from riding electric bikes, and from using certain classes of e-bikes. This ban was put in place due to a long history of kids riding their e-bikes irresponsibly around Carlsbad, becoming a danger to both themselves and others on the road.
Many young kids have parents who are unable to take them to school due to work and other reasons. Because of this, many kids must use electric bikes to get to places like school as it is their only form of transportation.
“[My younger cousin] says that he’s no longer able to ride to school anymore on his bike because of the ban,” freshman Noah Tatasciore said.
For many, this ban may come as a surprise. The city of Carlsbad deemed this ban essential in response to escalating safety concerns, as there were too many young riders who were being irresponsible to themselves and others around them.
“Me and my cousin first heard about the ban on the news,” Tatasciore said. “It shocked us, honestly because we had no idea that it was even being considered. But I have noticed a couple of young irresponsible riders from time to time going fast.”
This ban could unfairly impact young riders who already use electric bikes to get around. Some responsible riders, such as freshman Max Valenty, are caught in the middle of this ban, removing a vital source of transportation for many.
“It could maybe be unfair for kids who ride their e-bikes to school,” Valenty said. “But overall, I think it’s good because younger kids aren’t as strong and might not be able to handle the big bikes.”
Rather than banning every kid under the age of ten from riding electric bikes, many think that the choice should be up to the parents. E-bikes have provided busy families immense support in transporting kids to school.
“Sometimes, parents are busy and can’t take their kids to school, so the kids need e-bike’s to go places like school,” Tatasciore said.
The majority of kids, however, don’t require e-bike’s as their only form of transportation. Many community members believe that this ban was the right thing to do, and will positively affect the city rather than hurt it.
“I think this ban is good because it limits the amount of dangerous riders around Carlsbad and makes everybody safer,” Valenty said.
