Sixteen-year-old Christian Freeman, an exceptional cross-country runner, won first place at his last two competitions in Southern California. With these wins, this athlete is proving to be a driving force on the varsity cross country team.
Lancer Link: When did you start running cross country and why did it appeal to you?
Christian Freeman: In my sophomore year I wanted to get in shape for track. I was always pretty fast in soccer, too, which made me want to run.
LL: With a demanding sport like cross country what drives you to train?
CF: My friends mostly, and I really strive to be the best.
LL: Winning first in your last competition at Mt. Carmel how do you see yourself doing in CIF?
CF: I am of course hoping to win it, but I might try some new tricks I have picked up from other races.
LL: How much do you have to train to stay in shape?
CF: I run sixty miles a week. Nine miles a day can get pretty rough.
LL: Do you have any advice for any new cross-country runners?
CF: I always try to run every single day and run during the off-season to stay in shape.
LL: Has you vigorous training affected your school work and how do you balance it?
CF: I run, get home, do my homework and then go to bed. I have no social life.
LL: What is your favorite thing about running?
CF: I love singing on long distance runs and spending my time with friends.
