As our school transitions into the spring season, there are many new events that will take place, the most anticipated one being the spring musical, “9-5: The Musical.” The advanced theatre students went through a long audition process before the rehearsals began and now are putting in a lot of their time to ensure that the show will be at its best.

The theatre department has put on many performances, ranging from” Cinderella: The Musical” to  “Ghost: The Musical.”,  which was about a spirit who gets stuck between the real world and the spirit world. Something a little different about this year’s musical is that there are way more junior leads then there has ever been before. There was a long audition process that went on before the roles were chosen, and this includes different groups or solos that will be featured throughout the musical. The process can differ if the student is interested in a leading role.

“For the audition process, we have an audition appointment in which we sing a small excerpt of a song from the show that the music directors chooses,” junior Grace Kellett said. “At another time that week, we learn a dance from the choreographer for the show in order to see our dancing ability. After this, a ‘callback’ list is released of the select people that the director wants to see reading lines for certain roles. There, we read lines for various scenes with a bunch of other kids and it keeps switching up to check chemistry between actors for good fit.”

It’s been an absolute joy to learn from Mr. Blumer and be a part of this cool, creative process.”

The drama and choir programs are now putting a lot of their time into practices and making sure they will be ready for the show. There are many different parts of the musical, including the multiple dancing and singing numbers that the members of the musical will be rehearsing for. During these rehearsals, students will be learning how to portray their character in the best way possible for this musical, written by Patricia Resnick.

“I am most looking forward to all of the incredible friendships and happy memories we will make through the course of this show,” Kellett said. “It’s so much fun to act and sing alongside my best friends each day.”

As this is one of the last performances of the year, it is one of the last times to come and watch friends and family showcase their ability to portray this story. The event will be taking place in the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center on Apr. 27 at 6 p.m. and Apr. 28 at 6 p.m. There will also be shows the following weekend on May 3, 4 and 5 at 6 p.m., and an additional show at 1 p.m. on May 5.

“It’s been an absolute joy to learn from Mr. Blumer and be a part of this cool, creative process,” Kellett said.
