Freshman, Madison Huhn shoots the ball. The girls basketball season has just recently started up in early December.

This year, Coach Donna Huhn added three incoming freshmen onto the girls varsity basketball roster: Alison Sitarz, Brooklyn Kelley and Madison Huhn. Throughout the newbies youth, they have played with and against each other on various teams.  The three lady lancers are eager and excited to start their freshman season. The newest additions were welcomed by veteran team members with a surprise.

“The (existing varsity team) woke us up super early in the morning and then we had a team breakfast after which was super fun,” Sitarz said. ”Coming in as a freshman, I am so excited for my first season on varsity. I think we have a great team and with more practice, we will continue to get better.”

The girl’s varsity basketball team has had many games this season with a record of 8-2, they won against Sage Creek on Monday, December 16 with a score of 81-28. Even though the team is having a successful season so far they are always practicing and seeing what they can improve upon.

“We have been watching film to see how we can get better as a team,” Huhn said. “Also watching film on the other teams so that we can be prepared.”

As freshmen going onto a varsity team, they have some worries about what lies ahead but are excited for all the challenges they are going to face. As the underclassmen on the team, they have an opportunity to learn from the older athletes.

I am excited that my mom gets to be my coach and to be able to play the sport I love with great teammates!

“I am concerned about playing against juniors and seniors who have a lot more experience than I do,” Kelley said. “I am excited to get playing time in and spending time with the team and winning some games.”

Overall, all three girls are eager to start their high school experience with a spot on the CIF champion basketball team and are enthusiastic about the challenges they may face under the guidance of Coach Huhn.

“I am excited that my mom gets to be my coach and to be able to play the sport I love with great teammates!” Huhn said.
