Carlsbad High school sports have accomplished greatness this past year. The county watched as Carlsbad athletes made headlines, and teams reached championships, advancing further and achieving more than ever seen in school history.

Every team this spring season made CIF and almost all made it to the semis or better.  From swim to soccer, the lancers have asserted themselves as a power in prep athletics.

Lacrosse was no exception this spring season. The lancers started strong, overcoming adversity such as  injuries and having the best record to date.

Their momentum  carried into CIF as they entered as third seed.  The lancers earned a bye and faced scripps ranch at home in the quarter finals, their first ever home playoff game, winning  outright 8-6.  Meaning  that the lancers had won their first quarterfinal in school history.  Another first for the lacrosse team.

The next semifinal round was against Pacific Ridge, the opponent that struck them with their worst defeat of  the season. But, once again the lancers came out on top winning by a two goal margin, 9-7, sending them to the Division I Championships.

The Championships were held at Torrey Pines and were against the number one seed Westview.  The goal count stayed even throughout the game, until the second half when Westview broke through the Lancer’s defense, finishing the game 8-3, effectively ending Carlsbad’s historic run in CIF.

“We had a strong base to our team with a lot of talent,” captain Addison Sherwood said. “And our season had it’s ups and downs but in the end I’m very proud of what we have accomplished. ”

One might think that winning is everything but in the end it is what one has accomplished and how they got there.  The lax boys have joined an elite group of carlsbad athletes that have run train on CIF, setting records and accomplishing more and more every year.

“ I think we played great all year, and the memories that we have made along with our achievements will stay with me for the rest of my life,” junior David Manning  said.
