From major coffee chains to small neighborhood cafes, coffee culture continues to grow throughout Carlsbad. Chains like Starbucks and Dutch Bros often compete with local chains. Throughout Carlsbad, it is the difference in more local-oriented shops that shape the community.
A local resident in Carlsbad explained that coffee has become a major part of many people’s daily routines, whether it’s grabbing a quick drink before work or spending time with friends at a cafe. Different routines usually depend on where people grab their coffee.
“I usually shop at bigger chains,” Charlie Wilson said. “Because it is easier but I enjoy local chains more.”
As more cafes continue to open throughout Carlsbad, residents have begun paying closer attention to what separates one coffee experience from another. Many people mention that experiences can vary depending on the environment, service and quality offered at each location.
“The biggest difference between local cafes and chains I would say is the quality of the coffee itself,” Wilson said. “And the overall experience of local chains provides a much more intimate experience.”
With so many coffee locations throughout the city since cafes have become especially well known among residents. Popular local spots often attract customers because of both their atmosphere and the quality of their drinks.
“If I were to recommend a coffee shop in Carlsbad, I would say Lofty coffee,” Wilson said. “Because it offers a perfect balance of comfortability while also offering high quality coffee.”
Although local coffee shops are popular, Starbucks is a popular choice. Starbucks is a nationwide pick for many, often overlooking the local shops. Some people argue that Starbucks is more efficient due to its close proximity to major streets in Carlsbad.
“I choose Starbucks because they are everywhere,” sophomore Lizzie Fisher said. “It never adds much time to my destination.”
Beyond the counter, shops are also influenced by the City’s geography. A Starbucks on Tamarack Avenue might be easy for students, while local coffee shops in the village can be more comfortable for studying for meetups.
“I think people often forget when you’re in a local shop, you’re sitting next to your friends and community,” Wilson said. “At a chain, it feels like you’re just waiting for your name to be called.”
As Carlsbad grows, the decision to go to a busier chain or a local cafe will always remain. However, people in Carlsbad will have a variety of options. Local shops continue to expand, and continue to foster community and culture in Carlsbad.
“Even though Starbucks can be more accessible, I notice that local shops are starting to expand their menus,” Fisher said. “Local coffee shops in the Village remain a fun place for my friends to hang out.”
