May 11 was the day all hopeful singers had been waiting for. The day their dreams of being in advanced choir were either fulfilled or crushed.
Students auditioned to be a part of one of the four choirs offered at CHS. Lancer choir is a beginning choir which doesn’t require auditioning. However, encore, chamber singers and sound express all require an audition.
The audition process is not an easy feat. There are multiple aspects involved in auditions that many people aren’t aware of. To audition for a showchoir, a dance audition is also required.
“Carrie Smith is the head coach of the SDSU dance team,” senior Kara Sturiale said. “She teaches a dances to those who audition which they will perform and be scored by her and Miss Owen.”
Not only do you have to show your dance skills but also show off your voice in the vocal audition.
“You have to sing a one minute song of your choice in front of a panel of judges as well as sing “My Country Tis of Thee” and perform a small portion of acting or special talent,” Sturiale said.
Although the main deciding factors of auditions are the dance and vocal auditions, there is another aspect of auditions that is intimidating to most students. Miss Owen, the choir director, also wants to know where students are musically.
“Students had to be prepared to sight read, find the middle note of a chord and sing back three notes that are played,” Sturiale said.
Students shouldn’t worry about this as it does not greatly affect chances of being in a certain choir. Choir has many benefits and allows students to showcase their many talents and be a part of a group dedicated to performing as well as having fun.
“You grow a lot of confidence as a performer and make a lot of new friends,” Sturiale said.
With the many friends you make in choir, the time commitment seems to be less of a burden.
“If you make any advanced choir you can expect to dedicate a lot of time in the week leading up to a show because we have rehearsals almost everyday,” Sturiale said.
Ask anyone in choir if the time commitment is worth it and they all vow it is the best use of their time.
“The best part of choir is having all your hard work pay off when you’re on stage,” Sturiale said.
Best of luck to anyone who auditioned on the Saturday. Choir is the perfect outlet to showcase your talent.
