Twins Makenna and Morgan Herbst are looking to make a name for themselves on the San Diego track stage and beyond.
Morgan and Makenna Herbst’s journey in track and field began at a young age, fueled by a mutual love for competition and a drive to push each other to be great. From the moment they stepped onto the track, it was clear to their coaches that they were going to dominate their competition.
“Our mom introduced us to running and since then, we have been competing for high school and club track,” Makenna Herbst said.
Morgan and Makenna’s dedication to the sport allows them to stay motivated to do better. Day in and day out, they can be found on the track, pushing their limits and training to be the best of the best.
“Track is very rewarding,” Morgan Herbst said. “I love it because it clears my mind from any stress. Winning a race or getting a new PR is one of the best feelings ever.”
One of the most notable aspects of Morgan and Makenna’s journey is the unique bond they share as twins. While sibling rivalry is common, they have cultivated a relationship built on support, encouragement and mutual respect. Far from being competitors, they are each other’s biggest cheerleaders, celebrating victories and taking setbacks together. Their shared experiences on the track have strengthened their bond immensely.
“Morgan is a really good training partner,” Makenna Herbst said. “She pushes me to be better and improve every day.”
This sense of unity was on full display when Morgan Herbst shattered Carlsbad High School’s record in the 400m hurdles two separate times. While Morgan ran, Makenna showed her support from off the track.
“It was a great feeling to break the school record,” Morgan Herbst said. “It meant that all my work had paid off. When I did it again, Makenna was still right by my side cheering me on like she always has.”
As they look towards the future, Morgan and Makenna have their sights set on competing at the collegiate level. With their track record and talent, they have attracted the attention of recruiters from top-tier programs across the country.
“Oregon, Texas and Washington are definitely top choices,” Makenna Herbst said. “We have visited Oregon and Washington already but it would be amazing to receive an offer to be a Longhorn.”
But no matter where their journey takes them, one thing is certain: Morgan and Makenna will continue to push each other, inspire those around them and leave their mark on the world of track and field.
“There’s no one else I’d rather compete with,” Morgan Herbst said. “It’s so amazing to have her by my side.”
