Lancers clash with the Titans
Red Ribbon Week ended with a bang at the home football game on Friday, Nov. 1. as the Lancers beat the Poway Titans 35-0. Students, staff and fans got pumped up with their last bit of spirit.
“I love high school football games because they are a chance to be around new people and make new friends,” sophomore Kimberly Wynn said. “I go to almost every home game to show school spirit and support our football teams.”
Not only did Carlsbad come away with a victory, but the halftime show was one of a kind and specialized for Red Ribbon Week. During this week students have been participating in spirit events and recognizing the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse.
“Forty eight red biodegradable balloons were released to represent the deaths of teenagers every weekend due to drug and alcohol abuse,” teacher and game announcer Jeff Spanier said.
Student leaders released the balloons and they soared off as spectators took a moment of silence to honor the deaths. Everyone then celebrated Red Ribbon Week and went thrift shopping with the marching band. Together, band and color guard performed three songs.
“We put a lot of work into the halftime shows at every game,” freshman Antonio Aguirre said. “Our performance at the Poway game was one of our better ones because we really perfected a lot of things like dynamics, cleaning up the march and forming into the right shapes on the field.”
Lancers got five touchdowns during the game and are ranked at the top of the Avocado League. The Lancer Dancers and Cheerleaders had a distinct performance after the game that helped to savor and celebrate the win. They performed hip hop songs specialized for Spirit Week. Carlsbad has had a triumphant football season and this win against Poway contributed to their success. After a bye week the team will begin the first round of CIF on Nov. 22.
