Fresh off a CIF championship and league title, the CHS girls soccer team has moved on to the next round of Southern California Division I Regionals after defeating the Downey Vikings 1-0 on Tues., March 7.
With a little over 10 minutes left in the first half, freshman Christina Nixon scored the sole goal needed for the win.
“We didn’t play our best, but it feels good to keep the season going. I’m glad another freshman was able to clutch up at a crucial point in the game,” senior midfielder Haley Hendricks said.
Senior goalie McKenna Tollack, who only had to make one save the entire game, was protected well by the Lancer defense.
Downey goalie Adriana Salazar came up with some big saves, denying the Lancers from making the win a bit more comfortable. Nixon couldn’t capitalize on a breakaway shot in the closing moments of the second half, but was ecstatic to have scored the game winner.
“It felt amazing to score and I’m just happy I was in the right place at the right time. I’m glad our defense was able to shutout Downey,” Nixon said.
The top-seeded Lancers will now play another home game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. versus No. 4 seed Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos. Los Osos are a 2-1 winner over Carlsbad’s archrival La Costa Canyon. They boast a 25-0-3 record and should match up well against the 19-4-1 Lancers.
