On Dec. 21, the Carlsbad Lancers Varsity Mens Soccer team took on the Fallbrook Warriors in their second home game of the season.
Getting off to a good start, the Lancers took an early lead when junior Tito Cruz kicked a corner kick to Sam Oaks, who pulled off an amazing header. This goal brought the lancers to a 1-0 score within the first five minutes of the game.
“We got off to a really good start,” junior Jacob Berkowitz said. “Our team really came out strong and showed Fallbrook how well we could play.”
Carlsbad was not done yet, however. Just three minutes later, junior Ruben Gonzalez took the ball up the field and scored, bringing the Lancers to a 2-0 lead with thirty two minutes still left in the first half.
The Fallbrook Warriors continued to play strong. Not letting the Lancer’s early lead get to them, Fallbrook came back and scored making the game much more exciting. The score was now 2-1 Lancers, a very high scoring game in only the first twenty minutes of play.
“Fallbrook isn’t a bad team, and they showed that to us when they came back and scored. They really didn’t let our early lead get to them,” Berkowitz said.
The Lancers, however, showed Fallbrook what they could do once again, late in the first half. With nine minutes left until half time Saul Enciso scored an amazing goal, giving Carlsbad a 3-1 lead going into the second half.
The second half did not have nearly as much excitement as the first. Although both teams played well, neither team scored again, and when the ref blew his whistle at the end of the game, the score was still 3-1 Carlsbad.
“We played really well together as a team today,” Berkowitz said. “We came out from the beginning and played strong, and it paid off with this big win over the Warriors.”
