The use of Artificial intelligence has significantly increased over the years and has been a controversial topic. The use of fake AI generated images has been brought to people’s attention through celebrity drama and scams. At CHS, some students use AI as a resource for their coursework. Others, however, question if it should be used in schools.
AI is used by schools, businesses and celebrities, and the usage of the tool is continuing to grow all over the world. Many studies have provided examples as to why humans benefit from AI and why it should continue to grow, including advertising and assistance for students. The technology can be helpful for the future of education and science as it furthers research about new discoveries.
Despite the positives, AI may not always be used appropriately by all ages. AI can deceive many people, especially when it comes to propaganda or fake news. Big businesses and celebrities have had rumors and images spread about their personal life or company because of AI’s ability to create fake images.
Schools have discussed when it is appropriate to use AI and when it could be considered cheating. Students and teachers share various opinions about the usage of AI, mainly because some students may use it dishonestly to do their work or to plagiarize. Teachers have been setting expectations for students on when and how it is appropriate to use AI in classrooms to assist them with work. CHS Sophomore Laura Snow believes that AI can be beneficial by helping students find a starting point for assignments.
“I think it should be allowed for students to use,” Snow said. “There’s too much pressure around it, it is just really helpful to give students ideas and resources to assist them in their coursework.”
Although AI can be a beneficial tool for students and teachers to use in classrooms, plagiarism will continue to be a problem with students’ access to AI. The rules covering students’ use of artificial intelligence differ in each classroom at CHS depending on the teacher’s viewpoint on the issue. Junior at CHS Marley Adams has observed that some people use AI to cheat rather than as a way to get help.
“I’ve noticed kids not doing their own work and plagiarizing with AI [and] I know a lot of people that do that,” Adams said.
Many students have been known to copy or search up answers using AI in the classroom, and it has become an increasingly big issue at schools, including CHS. To combat cheating, teachers have access to websites that help them catch students who use AI on schoolwork to monitor the use of it.
Overall, AI continues to be a controversial topic due to the many benefits and drawbacks it provides for schools, businesses and social media. Many believe AI will become far more prevalent in the future, however, Snow hopes that as AI grows, society is able to use it for good rather than harm.
“I see AI growing in the U.S. and I do think there will be more restrictions on it, but I also think there will be more ways to use it,” Snow said.
