About the 2021 AP exams
March 28, 2021
The College Board’s AP exams are making a return to somewhat-normal this year, featuring full-length exams with some requiring in-person attendance. The College Board has made an effort to be flexible to each school’s needs, providing three different examination periods for schools to choose from according to their COVID-19 situation.
CHS has opted for Administration 2, allowing for both in-school and virtual test-taking. Test dates for this administration will occur between May 18 and May 28. CHS students and parents should have received a letter detailing this decision in their loopmail.
“[Carlsbad Unified School District] has determined exam dates and student assignments based on a variety of factors: Student safety with the large number of students participating, exam conflicts in the schedule for the high number of students taking multiple AP exams, and the possible limitations for on-campus testing space available during May and June,” the district said in it’s letter to families.
The College Board has not made all AP exams available online resulting in all foreign language exams and many higher-level math and science exams being offered exclusively on school campus. This is regardless of which administration the school chooses.
“CHS will offer in-person, on-campus, paper/pencil AP Exams for the following 7 subject exams: French Language, Spanish Language, Music Theory, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Physics C: Mechanics, and Statistics,” the district said in their letter to families.
As of early March, every student should have their test dates listed in their MyAP account. Students will not be able to change their test-taking administration on their own, but can email [email protected] if they do not feel comfortable with their in-person exams and would like to cancel. The deadline to do so for AP Calculus, AP Physics C, or AP Statistics has already passed.
“AP French, AP Music Theory and AP Spanish Language exams are offered by the College Board ONLY in an in-person, at-school format. Students registered for these exams may request a cancellation of the exam through April 30, 2021,” according to Carlsbad High’s exam registration page.
Though last year’s exams were entirely different than usual, the test results lined up accurately with the usual range of grades each AP exam has gotten in the past. This is encouraging news for everyone nervous about their online AP test-taking experience. For more on last year’s exam’s click here and for firsthand tips on taking AP tests, click here.
