Rigatoni Pasta TikTok Trend

Staff Writer, Reporter

Over the years of social media, we have seen many strange internet trends. This latest trend isn’t much of an ongoing episode, but rather a planned event happening on one day and one day only.

On May 24, 2021, TikTokers across the world are planning on buying and eating Rigatoni Pasta. A post by TikToker @jimmyrules32 pitched the idea in a 6-second video of a brick wall with the text, “Eat a bowl of rigatoni pasta on may 24 2021” with the song Funky Town playing in the background.

Since the creation of the TikTok post, an account called @rigatonipastacountdown was made. With 117.5K followers, the account has been posting daily countdowns for the event since January 14th, 2020. Why this choice of food and date were chosen remains a mystery.

In a poll asking CHS students if they would be participating, 56% of 103 Carlsbad students voted yes. However, even those who are planning on participating in the Rigatoni Pasta event don’t understand the idea behind it. One of these students is freshman Scarlett Savage.

“There is no true meaning and I am still confused on what it even means,” Savage said.

Others link this bizarre event to past TikTok trends that are seemingly even less logical.

“I don’t have an interest in TikTok, it seems like a poor investment [of] time in my opinion,” freshman Andrew Roelen from Sage Creek High School said. “There [have] been a lot worse trends in the past. Things like the cinnamon challenge and the tide pod-eating were just plain dumb. For this pasta trend, I’m not even sure what kind of influence it is but it’s kind of funny, not going to lie.”

For those who are interested in participating in the TikTok Rigatoni trend, Rigatoni Pasta can be found at local grocery markets. The iconic blue-boxed Rigatoni is available at Walmart, Vons, Smart & Final, and Ralphs. The lowest price can be found at Ralphs, with the pasta selling at $1.00 per box.
