Just one day after exchanging thanks with friends and family, shoppers across the nation scrambled in search of elusive savings. To find success in this frenzy at the Shoppes at Carlsbad, fashion-savvy juniors Ember Sierra, Gabby Fernandez-Stoll and Sophie Walton advised how to uncover the best Black Friday deals.

The Shoppes at Carlsbad, the recently renovated mall a five-minute drive away from Carlsbad High, opened from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, the mall opened its doors from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. While most stores operated according to this schedule, shoppers should have checked in with each individual shop they wished to visit to ensure Black Friday specials still applied.

“All the stores have their sales or deals as they choose,” Lisa Beavers at the Shoppes at Carlsbad management office said.

With shops like H&M, American Eagle Outfitters, Forever 21 and Bath and Body Works having limited deals, shoppers wanted to pick the best shopping strategies to maximize savings. Sierra advised shopping online for a less overwhelming experience and developed a solid plan beforehand. Sierra recommended starting off with quality items that one would not typically want to splurge on before moving on to finding staple items at low prices.

“During the Black Friday shopping season it can be very tempting to go overboard when you see really low prices,” Sierra said. “Just remember to shop consciously and spend wisely while seeking those deals.”

Fernandez-Stoll also advocated for online shopping and described the process as “addicting.” Although Fernandez-Stoll has never physically gone Black Friday shopping before, her mom has a strategy for finding good deals.

“She goes really early with my dad and they camp out and then I get surprised,” Fernandez-Stoll said. “I really like clothes and I like when I find a good outfit.”

Another seasoned Black Friday shopper is  Walton, vice president of Fashion Club, who advised shoppers to visit their favorite stores and make sure that they have good deals. For Walton, expressing herself creatively with activities like picking out a new outfit every morning can be the highlight of her day due to her enjoyment of fashion.

“I go Black Friday shopping every year,” Walton said. “It’s my favorite holiday.”
