BRIEF: 43rd annual People’s Choice Awards
January 20, 2017
New year, same awards shows. The 43rd Annual People’s Choice Awards is one of the first to start off this award season on Jan. 18, 2017 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Like the name implies, it is a ceremony in which the general public is given the opportunity to award their favorite celebrities and popular culture.
The People’s Choice Awards tradition first began in 1975 by its creator Bob Stivers and was later bought by the show’s only sponsor, Procter & Gamble in 1982. During the first few annual shows, voting was done via a Gallop poll and consisted of only 14 voting categories. Now that voting can be done online, it is more readily available to most people and as a result, 125 million votes were casted this year.
This year’s show was hosted by Joel McHale, an American comedian and actor best known for his role as a host for The Soup and for his appearance in Ted and Spy Kids. With 64 categories and well over 300 nominees, there were many wins and many losses. Some of the victories of the night included Johnny Depp for Favorite Movie Icon, Jennifer Lawrence for Favorite Movie Actress, Finding Dory for Favorite Movie, Justin Timberlake for Favorite Male Artist and Lily Singh for Favorite Youtube Star. The show concluded with a performance by the popular girl group Fifth Harmony.
With unpredictable results and well-liked nominees, the People’s Choice Award remains a thrilling and entertaining spectacle that the general public can be involved in.
