Sofia Romero struts through Carlsbad

Many young girls dream about a modeling career, to be tall, skinny and walk the runway, but for most, it remains an aspiration. Even though models seem flawless, dedication plays a big role in the art. Carlsbad High sophomore Sofia Romero was ready to take on this challenge when she was scouted at the age of 13.
“I did not expect it to come up because I was just at the mall with friends,” Romero said. “Someone stopped me asked me about modeling. At first, I was hesitant because I didn’t know if it was something I really wanted to do, but I am so glad I did.”
Soon after being recruited, Romero took a chance and pursued a modeling career with the help and support of her family members.
“I never thought I would model; I always wanted to but I never did because I was told I was too short or too young,” Romero said. “But my mom pushed me toward it, and ever since then, I haven’t stopped.”
Modeling has shifted Romero’s life. She attends school 3 out of 5 days, so finding time to catch up with schoolwork seems difficult while juggling private lessons, photo shoots and runway walking. She faces the dilemma of whether to focus on school or modeling because of her busy schedule.
“I hope to be more of a runway model and still do print, but I also want to focus on school because that is also a huge part of my life,” Romero said.
Her passion for modeling has helped Romero to develop confidence and maturity that gave her benefits within her career.
“Naturally, I am a very quiet, shy person, and it has helped me really open up, talk to people and network,” Romero said.
Modeling is an industry known for very harsh criticism , so many young models struggle at first.
“The hardest thing is the criticism; you just have to grow very thick skin and have strong self-confidence,” Romero said.
Throughout the years, Romero has set goals for herself, and plans to continue her modeling career in the future.
“I definitely want to become a well-known professional,” Romero said. “It is not going to be easy because it requires a lot of work.”
Romero has learned that hard work pays off in the end and has no regrets in making sacrifices in order to pursue her passion.
“The best thing is meeting new people and building new relationships,” Romero said. “I have become more of a new person and have matured because of my modeling career.”
