Among all the new clubs surfacing at Carlsbad High School this year, one club in particular broke the generic mold.
Climbing club was established at the beginning of this year along side a variety of other clubs, but climbers set themselves apart from the masses.
“Some friends and I said we should start a climbing club. So we did,” sophomore Zach Grove said. Grove is the club’s most experienced climber as well as the its founder and president.
Climbing thrives as a group activity, but identifying fellow climbers proves a challenge on such a large campus.
“We wanted to come together and talk about climbing,” Grove said, “Climbing club was created to bring together the climbing community,”
The club is also planning a sport climbing trip to Holcomb Valley in San Bernardino along with rough plans of longer summits later in the year.
The proactivity of the climbing club makes members feel that they stand apart from the all the rest. Most clubs only meet at lunch and discuss their subject for an hour a week, but climbing club sets itself apart by bringing it’s meetings to life.
“We actually go out and do things” senior Addison Sherwood said.
In the future, the climbing club hopes to continue its trips and build its audience from an initial base. In its early days, the club still consisted of its founders and experienced climbers, but the club expects a more diverse showing each week. Climbing club wants to expand the climbing community just in Carlsbad as much as they want to unite it.
Despite its developing membership , the climbing club is beginning its legacy at CHS with its motivation and strong central membership.
“Others should join if they enjoy climbing or mountaineering or being outdoors,” Co-president Jared Cohn said. “No experience is needed, just passion for the outdoors.”
