Advanced theater makes history with first place sweepstakes award

Members from the Hamlet scene that competed at DTASC celebrate as the announcer presents them as one of the top five trophy winners. The group ended the night with third place out of about 40 scenes, and Carlsbad placed a record high in recent years by placing 4th overall as a school among 50 competitors.

Thousands of theatre students anxiously wait as the results of semi-finals are announced. Once the codes of the schools continuing on are revealed, the final round starts. which determines the top 10 scenes of each category.

All the performers stood on stage after their suspenseful performance of Carrie the musical, which within a matter of seconds took audience members breaths away. The group performed exceptionally well at their DTASC competition, and despite Salute to the Winners being weeks after that, did not disappoint the crowd that night.

Advanced Theater seniors Adam Gilmore, Andrew Patterson, and Evan Ridpath perform an intense scene from their piece at the Theater Showcase on Oct. 22. At their DTASC competition the following weekend, they won second place out of 54 competitors.

In the All Female Cast category, freshman Christina Hendricks performs a scene from The Undertones with 3 other classmates, a play in which the main characters are haunted by the human form of their inner thoughts. For generally young actors, a scene from such an advanced play is very challenging to perform, and requires hours of rehearsal.
