Carlsbad runs circles around Rancho Buena Vista
With a final score of 73 – 63, the Carlsbad boys and girls track team (3-1) came out on top against Rancho Buena Vista High School at the Lancer Stadium this past Thursday. Although RBV proved to be a considerable opponent, our Lancers still came out with a win.
In the varsity boys 100 meter High Hurdles, Carlsbad won with a sweep. Junior Dylan Rutledge secured first place with a time of 15:84, followed by senior Zachary Jones (16:54) in second and sophomore Justin Oetting (16:99) in third.
After several back-to-back defeats by Rancho Buena Vista in the first few girls track events, junior and varsity runner, Sarah Sheets found victory at the end of her 100 meter High Hurdles with a time of 16:01. Sheets’ victory brought back Carlsbad’s cheers and enthusiasm.
In the varsity boys 1600 meter run, Carlsbad swept the competition away led by senior Sean Unger and senior Cody Drisko. The duo received first and second place with a final time of 4:27.11 and 4:27.55, respectively.
“We’ve been practicing distance everyday, so everyone has been improving everyday,” Drisko said, “But even though we’re missing our two top jumpers [senior Bar Suster and senior Julia Haselhuhn], I think we’ll walk away with a victory.”
After such standout wins on the track, our Lancers did not disappoint in their field events either.
Junior Jordan Lewis and senior Matthew Tomaneng led the team in the boys varsity High Jump by clearing heights of 6’1″ and 5’7″, receiving second and third place, respectively.
“Considering I almost beat my personal record, I think I did pretty well,” Tomaneng said. “With just small errors, I know I have a lot of room to improve before the season is over.”
In the girls varsity pole vault finals, senior Helen Girod cleared an impressive 9’0″, earning her first place against Rancho Buena Vista.
With victories all around the track and field, Carlsbad’s Track and Field team sprinted away with a win. Be sure to come out and support their upcoming meets for the rest of the season.
