Walk inside Rocket Fizz and you’ll find soda pop, old fashioned candy, a wall of assorted taffies, and even scorpion filled lollipops. Rocket Fizz, this fairly new candy store, happens to be owned by the family of a CHS student.
Junior Miya Fukutomi and her family moved from Camarillo to Carlsbad her freshman year of high school. Not only did they bring their family down here, but they also brought a local candy store with them as well.
“It was our favorite place to get candy,” Fukutomi said. “So we opened up one down here around this time last year”.
This old fashioned candy store, has a few stores open in California and each one is run by a different family. Each family puts a bit of their own character into the store.
“We have a retro-soda pop kind of theme to our store,” Fukutomi said.
Rocket Fizz isn’t filled with just regular old candy. Unlike name brand candy stores such as ‘The Sweet Factory’, Rocket Fizz has unique flavors and assorted types of candy. One of the stores specialties is the bins of many flavors of taffies anyone can fill up a bag with.
“We sell all types of candy, candies from different countries and candies from different time periods,” Fukutomi said. “Parents walk in and can see candies they had as a child.”
Unlike most high school students, Fukutomi doesn’t have any trouble finding a job. Whenever her help is needed, she goes over to help her family run the store. She could tell you which sweets are the best, worst, or have the most sour flavor.
“My favorite candy is cow tales. They are a tootsie roll type candy filled with creme,” Fukutomi said.
Everyone will enjoy the sweet delights this new addition brings to the community. Before going to see a new movie, many people can opt for the good prices at Rocket Fizz to avoid overpriced candy at the movie theatre.
