The eight secret restaurants are shown on this map, coordinated by color. The high school is at the bottom center of the map.

Everyday, students sprint to their cars after third or fourth period to rush to their favorite lunch destinations. Kids flock to restaurants such as Knockout (Pizza or Burger) or Mexico Viejo, many of whom get stuck in long lines, leaving little time to eat their food, shortening their favorite time of the school day.

How do you avoid the rushes? The most logical solution is to leave school quicker. With dozens of cars trying to depart the lot, however, this is a struggle.

Another solution may be to call into the restaurant. This may be limited to just the restaurants that offer this service, though.

Students could simply stay on campus for lunch. There are spots all over campus where kids can hang out, with plenty of options in the cafeteria.

Finally, you could venture out to ‘secret’ restaurants around the high school area, in order to beat the lunch rush and enjoy a delicious meal. Here are eight places where students can eat a meal without being constrained by time.

1) Alberto’s – 1850 Marron Rd, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 729-8215

Located by the Souplantation near the mall, Alberto’s holds the authenticity of a real Mexican restaurant, without the crowds. From Carne Asada Fries to mouthwatering burritos, this restaurant is quite affordable and gives you more than enough time to eat your meal and be back to class on time.

2) Brooklyn Boy’s Pizza – 2183 Vista Way # B8, Oceanside, CA – (760) 757-499

Located across the 78 in the same lot as McDonald’s and Submarina, Brooklyn Boy’s features a wide variety of pizzas, including thin crust and even deep dish. The quality is amazing, and they have a two slice and drink combo (just like Knockout), and Carlsbad students receive a discount. The service is quick, you will have plenty of time to eat and come back to school.

3) Teri Cafe – 2216 S El Camino Real #123, Oceanside, CA (760) – 722-8399

Next to the Target off El Camino Real just north of the 78, Teri Cafe offers Japanese cuisine wide variety of options, including Sushi, rice, soup, Teriyaki chicken and more. This one takes a bit longer to make, so I would recommend calling into the restaurant on the way over if you want enough time to be back to class on time.

4) Boston Market – 2606 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 434-8885

Placed near Sprout’s and Rubio’s off of El Camino Real, Boston Market offers multiple combo meals, all kinds of sandwiches like roast beef and pulled pork, salads and more, all at a reasonable cost. Boston Market is quick enough to enjoy a meal and make it back to class.

5) Hooked on Sushi – 2508 El Camino Real # A, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 434-8811

Located next to Mexico Viejo, Hooked on Sushi gives the quaint feeling of a Japanese home. They give big portions of Teriyaki bowls and soups, along with delicious sushi. The restaurant prepares its food however, and it would be smart to call in beforehand.

6) Pronto’s – 2812 Roosevelt St, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 434-2644

Located in the village across from the Danish Bakery, Pronto’s offers delicious soups, sandwiches, salads and pastries. Pronto’s features lunchtime specials in a small setting. Service is great, and due to its proximity to the school, a return to class on time is easy.

7) Village Grille – 2833 State St, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 729-3601

Next to the Coaster train station in downtown, The Village Grille offers some of Carlsbad’s finest burgers, french fries and milkshakes. It takes some time to get your food, so I would advise calling in on the drive to the restaurant.

8) Top of the Bagel – 2540 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA – (760) 729-4647

Next to Mexico Viejo, Top of the Bagel includes 16 deluxe sandwiches from avocado to barbeque chicken, all but one of which are under six dollars. They also have soups, salads and smoothies, all at reasonable costs. Top of the Bagel gives enough time to return to class on time.
