Mary Beth Tinker, champion of the freedom of speech visits Carlsbad High on a nation wide tour to promote awareness of student press law for high schoolers across the country. At only age seventeen, Tinker won a supreme court case when her school district in Des Moines tried to ban her from wearing black peace bands surrounding the war in Vietnam.

On Feb. 12, Carlsbad suffered a tragic loss with the death of Vinnie Zellefrow in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Pacific Coast Highway. The driver was a 17-year-old Carlsbad girl who was arrested later that evening. A memorial at the crash site commemorates Zellefrows life as a lively Carlsbad graduate, decorated with notes and momentos from loved ones.
