Roller hockey: CHS’s unexposed talent

CHS’s roller hockey team dominated the Geoff Galindo Memorial Shield tournament held November 18-21. Wait, Carlsbad has a roller hockey team? YES! And a darn good one, too. The trouble is no one knows of their existence.

At the November 19 game, Lancers defeated San Pasqual 8 to 1. Brandon Groves scored the first goal 45 seconds into the game. The boys were able to take advantage of the mistakes made by the Eagles. A San Pasqual teammate was thrown out of the match due to attitude involving the referees. Over all, there was a tremendous amount of action.

“We really have a lot of talent,” Coach Klauber said.

Almost all of the boys had prior coaching in local roller or ice hockey teams. High school practices are held only once a week, off campus. Next year, the team will definitely try getting involved with CIFs.

“We don’t letter, we aren’t funded, but we hold our own,” Sophomore Jared Cohn said.

Roller hokey has been apart of Carlsbad athletics for about five years, with Coach Ken Klauber only involved for the last two. This year’s potentially undefeated season was blemished by only two losses with tough competition from nearby schools. The team leaks their only real competition was Westview; the team they came up short to twice.

Composed of mostly underclassman with Junior Max Kropozyoski and Senior Kaleb Klauber as the sole upperclassmen, the close knit group hope to amp an interest with the sport in the future. They wish for more than just parents and girlfriends to support at games.

With the team motto “Look sharp, play sharp” the boys really represent Carlsbad. Very classy, the boys flip out their shirt collars under their jerseys for good luck. Definitely look for our scoring sophomores Groves Brandon and Cohn at upcoming games.
