Emily Dewhurst: Carlsbad’s new ASB president

Mackinley Sebahar, Sports editor

As of today, April 1st 2016, Emily Dewhurst is officially Carlsbad High School’s 2016-2017 ASB president. This leadership role is one that requires hard-work and determination. Dewhurst has many exciting ideas in store for next year at CHS to be a successful one.

“This year ASB obviously set the bar really high and next year we have a lot to live up to,” Dewhurst said. “Señor and I have already been talking about things we’re going to do for next year to make the year memorable. I want to make sure everyones included next year. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of the people and hopefully being able to reach underclassmen too, not just the upperclassmen.”

Being ASB president is a big role to take on. It requires hundreds of hours of working, all to improve CHS.

“Since I was the Junior class vice-president, I understand what you have to do and the responsibility that comes with being the ASB president,” Dewhurst said.

Many events at CHS are highly anticipated each year. ASB is always working towards improving these events to provide a good experience for everyone that attends.

“Next year I definitely want to improve on keeping the spirit up for every sport,” Dewhurst said. “I think we did that more this year compared to other years but I think we really need to emphasize going to all events. I think we should also focus more on woman’s events. They’re not as supported as the mens so I think we can definitely improve upon that. I also think Prom is going to be super fun. Next year we have really cool options for the venue and whichever one we pick is going to be new and different.”

ASB has helped provide Dewhurst with the positive high school experience she always hoped for.

“Coming from freshman year to now, I never thought I would be in this position,” Dewhurst said. “I’ve met a lot of people already. Coming from a private school was really hard my first two years and I really struggled with being happy in this school. Being involved really made me happy and helped me find friends. I’m really thankful that I’ve met a lot of people through ASB.”

Dewhurst has exceeded the qualifications for the position. With an extremely tight schedule and many leadership roles, Dewhurst finds balance through managing her time.

“I’m in AP classes, I’m the vice-president of best buddies, and I’m the editor-in-chief for the yearbook this year and I will be next year too,” Dewhurst said. “I also own a horse so I horse-back ride almost everyday. Balancing everything is pretty stressful and I’ve learned that a lot this year. Sometimes you have to sacrifice certain things. Time management and always making time to be with your friends and  family is very important.”

Although this past year at CHS may seem unbeatable, there is always room for improvement. Dewhurst is working hard to make the 2016-2017 year one to remember.

“I’m looking forward to creating the same atmosphere we did this year but to keep on pushing for bigger and better things,” Dewhurst said.
