Adele sets fire to Taylor Swift’s reign as ‘queen of pop’

Goodbye, Taylor. “Hello,” Adele.

Adele dropped “Hello,” her new highly anticipated single in late October, as her reemergence into Hollywood after a 4-year hiatus, which smashed records. Receiving 27.7 million views within the first 24 hours trumps Taylor’s star-studded ballad “Bad Blood,” which received a mere 20.1 million views in the first 24 hours. This is promising news for Adele’s new album, “25”, released November 20.

Adele’s six minute video shot using IMAX cameras illustrates heartbreak, relationships and the aftermath of both. The single foreshadows what’s to come in the release of the new album.

“My last record was a break-up record and if I had to label this one, I’d call it a make-up record,” Adele said on a Facebook post. “I’m making up with myself. Making up for lost time. Making up for everything I ever did and never did.”

Between this note on Facebook and her new hit single, Adele evoked anticipation among followers worldwide who awaited her new album. Momentum hasn’t slowed down since “Hello” debuted. People are not just responding, but making it viral, stacking views on the video up to a whopping 588 million to date. Though the video has a long way to go before matching Taylor’s 649 million views on “Bad Blood,” Adele’s hot single is definitely on track to the top.

The year has been a defining time for the two reigning queens of pop. It is clear that Adele’s first album since 2011 will reflect the phenomenal success of her single “Hello”. With the single topping T-Swifts “Bad Blood,” it is only fair to predict that her album will do the same; however, only time will tell.

Recently, Adele’s album “25” broke the record for most single-week record sales, which was previously held by *NSYNC’s “No Strings Attached” since 2000.
