Intermediate and advanced theater shine at DTASC
Members from the “Hamlet” scene that competed at DTASC celebrate as the announcer presents them as one of the top five trophy winners. The group ended the night with third place out of about 40 scenes, and Carlsbad placed a record high in recent years by placing 4th overall as a school among 50 competitors.
For the first time in CHS Theater history, both the Advanced and Intermediate theater classes attended spring DTASC, a theater convention that focused solely on Shakespeare’s works, and students in small groups acted out scenes from different Shakespearean plays. The catch–students could only use four chairs and colored T-shirts as props and costumes to make their show come alive.
“Getting to share the DTASC experience with Intermediate Theatre this year was extremely cool,” junior and advanced theater-member Karinya Ghiara said. “It’s always fun to have more people in the theater DTASC family, and it just meant that we had extra groups to cheer on and be proud of!”
Traditionally, intermediate theatre never had enough students to participate in DTASC, but this year, the all-freshmen class was ready to rise to the challenge. Intermediate theater students worked extremely hard alongside the advanced classes to prepare their events for the competition. Some of the Shakespeare events include a large group drama (scene from Hamlet), Shakespeare’s clowns and fools (a performance based on Shakespeare’s ‘foolish’ characters), modern Shakespeare (requiring a modern adaptation of a Shakespearean play) and many more.
“DTASC this year was an exhilarating experience,” Ghiara said. “Everyone had so much energy, and all the performances were so much fun to watch. Intermediate did an amazing job this year, and we’re so glad they got to join us this year.”
Also, both the intermediate and advanced classes’ hard work was reflected in the results. Out of 63 other high schools in attendance, the advanced class received: 4th for Hamlet, 3rd for Clowns and Fools, Honorable Mention for Twelfth Night, 4th for Sets Lights and Costumes and 3rd for Character Costumes. The Intermediate theater pulled off many high rankings as well.
“It was such an amazing opportunity to attend spring DTASC this year,” freshman and intermediate theater-member Rebecca Allen said. “Usually the intermediate class isn’t allowed to go, so it was such an honor to be included in such an amazing event. DTASC is just a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase all our hard work from the entire year.”
